Towards Formal Semantics for QoS Support
نویسندگان
چکیده
The introduction of the concept of QoS has led to an extension of the traditional concepts of service and service specification. However, design of QoS support is usually done without a systematic approach, leading to concepts of QoS support ranging from basic QoS monitoring capabilities to hard real-time guarantees. In more advanced QoS support, intermediate layers should be designed in a way that enables the masking or controlled handling of sporadic QoS violations. To implement this degradation path support across multiple layers, a negotiation of preferred and supportable failure semantics is a requirement. To realize these advanced QoS support features, not only new QoS control mechanisms within the layers have to be developed but the semantics of QoS negotiation protocols between layers must be better understood and subsequently extended. A framework formally based on set theory and relations is presented that allows the specification of QoS hierarchies including a well-defined failure type model. The framework supports the development of QoS negotiation protocols and can be used as a formal base for a structured system analysis.

Towards Realizing Dynamic QoS-aware Web Service Composition
In this paper, we identify two major issues related to Web service composition: the lack of formal specifications for services and service compositions and the inability of current service composition approaches to support dynamicity and QoS-awareness in an effective and scalable way. We analyze the underlying research challenges for each of these issues and propose a tentative research plan to...
متن کاملTowards a Formal Semantics for Autonomic Components
Autonomic management can improve the QoS provided by parallel/distributed applications. Within the CoreGRID Component Model, the autonomic management is tailored to the automatic – monitoring-driven – alteration of the component assembly and, therefore, is defined as the effect of (distributed) management code. This work yields a semantics based on hypergraph rewriting suitable to model the dyn...
متن کاملTowards an ODP-Compliant Object Definition Language with QoS-Support
This paper presents ODL-Q, an object definition language with QoS support. ODL-Q is based on TINA ODL and extended with a contractual QoS approach where OCL is used to specify the QoS characteristics an object provides and requires. OCL is a formal language included in UML to express side-effect-free constraints. The QoS specification is based on an event model with a dating function used to sp...
متن کاملA Formal Semantics for a Quality of Service Contract Language
Current interests in the context of system development include non-functional aspects of an application and the quality of the service (QoS) it provides. In video on demand applications, for instance, properties such as delay, bandwidth and CPU utilization are monitored in order to identify if they are within acceptable limits. In our approach, non-functional requirements are described by contr...
متن کاملA Modelling Framework for Integrated QoS in High-Speed Networks
With the emergence of new multimediaapplications and their diverse Quality of Service (QoS) requirements , new tools and methods are required for the support of evaluating QoS within communication protocol layers and end-systems. Our modelling framework is an attempt to provide an integrated environment for the development of models with regard to a hierarchy of high-speed protocols, with an em...
